It was probably about 1991. I had bought a new Chevy truck and used it for a few months. One day I drove it through a very large puddle and it immediately started making bad noises. I took it back to the dealer and they decided that it needed a new engine.
One day I was visiting the dealer to check on the progress of changing out the engine. It seemed to be taking longer than they originally told me it would be. I remember seeing the 454 SS sitting in a bay. I asked them if it was being traded in. That was my first mistake. Taking it for a "test drive" was my second and final mistake. I remember cruising down a local highway doing about 55 and stomping on the gas. Just to see what it would do, ya know. I swear the tires chirped at 55 as I was slammed back into my seat. When I very reluctantly returned to the dealer I asked that they be gentle with me as I took out my wallet.
For many years I drove my Trusty Steed to work daily. I was still in the Navy back then and had it shipped to Hawaii and then back after my tour aboard the USS Birmingham. For a few reasons I stopped driving it daily and there were long periods of just sitting. Even now I don't drive it much. But there's no way I'd ever get rid of it. I do love my truck.
I hope to start spending some money on it one of these days. I need to have all the dings and scratches removed. I'd like to have it repainted a deep dark black with some metal flake in it that you'd only see in the sun. No fancy flames or anything. In fact I might even leave the 454 SS decal off. Police really do like my truck to much as well. I'd love to have the dash board replaced but nothing fancy, very plain looking. And a new leather interior would be nice. I've never cared for what they threw in these beauties. Of course I'd have to replace the sound system and have a few alarms added. I'm not sure I'd do anything with the engine. It already goes way faster than I'd ever need or want to go again. I wouldn't mind seeing if I could squeeze a few more MPGs out of it though, but not at the expense of performance.
